Tagging and Extracting
Once the majority of the subcategories had been chosen, the task of identifying and extracting the quotations began. These subcategories were entered as reusable tags in the text editor BBEdit. The tags were placed at the beginning and end of each phrase. Overlapping tags were not used, and some text was not tagged at all. Each full letter was wrapped in a body tag and saved as an XML file. Each XML file was then uploaded to a free XML to CSV converter, Luxon Software (http://www.luxonsoftware.com/converter/xmltocsv). For each letter, this application exported the phrases by tag into separate spreadsheets. These spreadsheets were merged by subcategory, and then merged by larger theme. The completed CSV files contained three columns: original letter number, subcategory, and the quotation.
